They Didn't Believe Me Sung By Walter Van Brunt and Gladys Rice 1915
Переглядів 2,4 тис.2 роки тому
A popular song at the time of The First World War. The timing of the song's arrival meant that it was one of many songs adapted by soldiers in the trenches- on this occasion an ironic take on the allegedly 'easy' life in the trenches. It is featured in that form (retitled "We'll Never Tell Them") at the end of Richard Attenborough's 1969 film Oh! What a Lovely War. The lyrics of this original s...

When They Asked Us From Oh What A Lovely War!
RIP To the 95,675 British troops, 50,729 French troops, and 164,055 Imperial German troops who were killed in the Battle of the Somme
this feels like 5 stages of grief
Quite a voice she has.
Thank you so much for showing even the humble goats helping comfort weary soldiers. I wish you had shown Sergeant Billy. He was a goat from Saskatchewan Canada and went with his soldiers all the way to the front, survived and even went home again. There is a wonderful children's book about him, titled Sergeant Billy, the goat who went to war. He was stuffed and is preserved in a small war memorial museum in Broadview SK.
This movie used to be free to watch on yt. When the platform changed hands it went behind a paywall. Maybe whoever owns the copyrights should re-release it in cinemas. It might knock some sense into the ones who want war.
The fact that this guy is still posting after 14 years is amazing
Remember those souls that stood beside us during the wars...God bless them xx
'Goodbye-ee' replaced the popular British Army song 'Tipperary' by the end of WW1. The victorious British Army entered Cologne singing this song. (Guardsman Fred Noakes, in a letter home, dated 18 Dec 1918)
POV:when you see someone you dont like in the mall
War can cure social malaise and distract from social unrest. War fever took hold right across the Continent and beyond. The apple was ripe and it fell, only later did people realise it was rotten and full of maggots.
The bells.
Good ol ANZACS taking the piss out of the British leadership who used them as cannonfodder

I am Australian.. I think you need to read / lsten to Dulce et Deccorum Est by Wilfred Owen to understand how the English soldier fared during WW1.
What a lovely video. Looking at all those young soldiers brought tears to my eyesas many probably did not live.
Que hermosa es la melodia del himno de River Plate que nos la copian en otras latitudes!😅🇦🇹
beautiful stuff
Nights are growing very lonely, Days are very long; I'm a-growing weary only List'ning for your song. Old remembrances are thronging Thro' my memory Till it seems the world is full of dreams Just to call you back to me. Chorus: There's a long, long trail a-winding Into the land of my dreams, Where the nightingales are singing And the white moon beams. There's a long, long night of waiting Until my dreams all come true; Till the day when I'll be going down That long, long trail with you. All night long I hear you calling, Calling sweet and low; Seem to hear your footsteps falling, Ev'ry where I go. Tho' the road between us stretches Many a weary mile, I forget that you're not with me yet When I think I see you smile. Chorus: There's a long, long trail a-winding Into the land of my dreams, Where the nightingales are singing And the white moon beams. There's a long, long night of waiting Until my dreams all come true; Till the day when I'll be going down That long, long trail with you.
I've seen some beautiful flowers, Grow in life's garden fair, I've spent some wonderful hours, Lost in their fragrance rare; But I have found another, Wondrous beyond compare. There's a rose that grows on "No Man's Land" And it's wonderful to see, Tho' its spray'd with tears, it will live for years, In my garden of memory. It's the one red rose the soldier knows, It's the work of the Master's hand; Mid the War's great curse, Stands the Red Cross Nurse, She's the rose of "No Man's Land". Out of the heavenly splendour, Down to the trail of woe, God in his mercy has sent her, Cheering the world below; We call her "Rose of Heaven", We've learned to love her so.
Old documentary from the cathode ray tube Fuzzle Jug days...
Maggie Smith was amazing in this great movie
Soldiers are probably the world’s greatest cynics, but then they have to be really.
Ça me rappelle l'histoire de Samvel Manukyan de clouange
When I arrived at my unit in Germany in 1981, we had eight gas masks for twelve people.
This is a real song, I found it in a us army song book from 1941 "this book is property of the United States government and it's contents may be used only within military service."
flash forward 2024 and Im sure there are groups in Tel Aviv, Washington, Tehran , Moscow and Kyiv doing the same moronic song and dance..all rich and old......
Not relevant
british humor is always either absolutely awful or the most funny shit you'll ever hear in your life
Disturbingly cheery version of the song, given the context.
There's a tenor on top of John McCormack melody line that just sounds so pure and committed to the moment. This song brings tears to my eyes when I think about the young men who heard this song and were motivated to do their duty while preparing for battle. Remarkably, several armies (German, Russian, USA, Australian) also adopted the music with different words.
they did NOT have a friend in jesus
I have been talking to some teenagers recently , most of them have no Clue I was asking them about conscription, they were all like yeah we’ll go it’ll be fun. It seems to be coming around again the delusion I mean War Really is and also what you’re fighting for like these poor young guys at the som I feel it’s coming round again , they don’t teach it properly in school)😢 it’s very apparent !!
This music is used in BF1918 mod of BF1942
Try singing this drunk
7:00 HITLER HAS ONLY GOT ONE BALL. GORING. HAS 2 BUT VERY SMALL. HIMMLER. HAS ONE THAT SIMILAR. BUT GOEBELLS HAS NO BALLS AT ALL 😂
I know the lyrics are “they were only playing leapfrog “ but it sounds to my ears like the diggers are saying “they were Randy flying leapfrogs”
This is just brilliant.
Very nice, thanks.
When hearing this, I thought “Wait, this is from The Great Pumpkin special”.
Why does this song make me cry? Every single time... Every time...
i discovered this from a ww1 game on roblox and i love it, game was called Trench War
S tier song
[Verse 1] Though you’re leaving me today, never fear In my thoughts you’ll always be ever near There’s a tear in ev’ry eye, As the boys go marching by, But they’re out to do or die, hear them cheer. All the things you planned to do, I am sure they will come true, And I’ll watch and wait for you, over here. [Chorus] Au revoir, but not Good-Bye, Soldier Boy. Brush that tear drop from you eye, Soldier Boy. When you’re on the deep blue sea, Will you sometimes think of me? I’ll be waiting anxiously, Soldier Boy. Tho’ we’re many miles a part, Soldier Boy, Keep my picture near your heart, Soldier Boy. When you’ve won your victory, God will bring you back to me, Au revoir but not Good-Bye, Soldier Boy. [Verse 2] Though your mother old and grey ‘waits you here I will comfort her each day, never fear. We all love you and you know That we’re proud to see you go, But we’re goin’ to miss you so, over here. When your fighting days are through, For the old Red White and Blue, We’ll be here to welcome you, with a cheer.
It seems to me that many of the people affected, accepted their poverty etc without question, knowing 'their place."
Generations thought trench warfare was consigned to the history books, think again.
I bet my Granddads were somewhere on these scenes 😢
The effforts and sacrifice of this generation makes the ‘Woke’ brigade nothing more than a bunch of wingeing social parasites that are effective as a fart in a tornado.
Happy Leap Day!
